Highway 194 Mesaba Ave bridge traffic control changes Aug. 10 (Aug. 6, 2026)

DULUTH, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation will be continuing bridge repair work in the area of Highway 194 (Mesaba Ave), I-35 and Superior Street and changing traffic control on Aug. 10.

Starting on Monday, Aug. 10, the onramp from Mesaba Ave to southbound I-35 will close. Traffic will be detoured on Michigan St to 21st Ave W to Hwy 53 to I-35. City of Duluth work will not impact this detour route. This closure is expected to last through the end of September.

Westbound Highway 194 (Mesaba Ave heading up the hill) between W Superior St and W 1st St will remain closed through Aug. 26. Motorists can exit I-35 and access Superior St and Michigan St.

A marked pedestrian detour for pedestrian bridge reconstruction travels from Michigan Street to Mesaba Ave to 1st St to 6th Ave W.

Overall project work will last through October and includes bridge rehabilitation, pavement replacement and storm sewer work. Please visit the project website for additional information. Travelers can plan ahead and see updated road closures and traffic conditions at 511mn.org.
