US Officials Reject Reports of Border Patrol Chief’s Dismissal
“Chief Gregory Bovino has NOT been relieved of his duties,” said Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the US Department of Homeland Security, on the social media platform X.
She added that Bovino remains “a key part” of President Trump’s team and described him as “a great American.”
Earlier reports had suggested Bovino was relieved following the recent fatal shooting of a protester in Minneapolis by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, citing unnamed sources. Those reports also noted that Bovino had been the public face of a traveling immigration enforcement initiative in Democratic-led cities, and his alleged removal was interpreted as a potential shift in the administration’s approach.
On Monday, President Trump announced that border czar Tom Homan would be sent to Minnesota amid rising tensions. The White House said Homan will oversee ICE operations in the state “to continue arresting the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens.”
